Vancouver Whitecaps' path to the 2026 MLS Cup is finally set

The Vancouver Whitecaps are looking to finish the job this season.

It’s been another exciting year for the Whitecaps, who finished off the 2026 MLS season atop the Western Conference and second overall with a sparkling 19-8-7 record. They got within a single win of the 2025 MLS Cup Final last season, losing 3-1 to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami last December, and the road to redemption will start later this month.

The MLS Playoff bracket is set, and the Whitecaps will enter as the top seed in the Western Conference. Their opponent for the first-round best-of-three series will be either the Seattle Sounders FC or Real Salt Lake, who will face off in a single-elimination wildcard match on Nov. 19.

Vancouver will hold home-field advantage all the way through the playoffs, unless they face the league-leading Nashville SC in the MLS Cup Final.

The Whitecaps had mixed results against Seattle this past season, losing both CONCACAF Champions Cup matches against the Sounders early in the year. Vancouver did, however, defeat Seattle in their two MLS regular season matches, including a 5-1 drubbing on Nov. 1.

They had much more dominant results against Salt Lake, shutting them out over the course of two MLS regular season matches by a combined score of 4-0. It’s safe to say that the Whitecaps will enter either matchup as heavy favourites to move on.

Vancouver has been getting help all-around the roster this season. Forward Brian White has led the way offensively, with a career-best 20 goals this season, while German superstar Thomas Müller has been as steady as ever with 9 goals and 6 assists.

On the defensive side, fullback Tate Johnson could be a candidate to win the MLS defender of the year award, which would be quite an accomplishment as a 21-year-old outside back.

If Vancouver can stave off an upset, they will advance to the single-elimination portion of the bracket, where either the San Jose Earthquakes or the Houston Dynamo FC will await them in the second round.

Game 1 of the Whitecaps’ first-round series is set to go on Nov. 22 at BC Place.
