Heavy demand for tickets to the Vancouver Whitecaps’ home opener against the Montreal Impact has led the team to make the decision to open the full lower bowl at BC Place on March 4th.
“We’re very close to filling our regular capacity of 22,120, keeping us on track to have our best-ever season-opening crowd,” said Rachel Lewis, Whitecaps FC chief operating officer. “It promises to be a special atmosphere on March 4 to kick off our 2018 campaign.”
The Whitecaps have increased capacity for home games on rare occasions, usually for games against Cascadia rivals Seattle and Portland. This is the first time they’ve done it for a home opener.
The team should break the franchise record for attendance at a home opener. The record was set at the franchise’s first-ever MLS game in 2011, when 22,592 people showed up to Empire Field.
