Reinforcements are on the way for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Daily Hive has learned that the Whitecaps are close to acquiring Sebastián Ramírez from Fortaleza FC in Colombia’s Liga Dimayor. The Miami-born defensive midfielder is a dual citizen of the United States and Colombia.
The 21-year-old was at the National Soccer Development Centre on Friday to complete his medical, meet his new teammates, and tour the facility.
It’s been a busy transfer window for Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster, with Ramírez set to join new players, Kwasi Poku, and Aleksa Cvetković. The Serbian midfielder, Cvetković will join Vancouver once his visa paperwork is fully completed.
Traveling Whitecaps fans headed to Seattle
The Whitecaps will play Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders on Sunday night at Lumen Field, with over 300 travelling Whitecaps fans in attendance. The Whitecaps paid for two full busses and tickets for registered members of the Vancouver Southsiders.
“It’s great,” Ryan Gauld told reporters following training. “Obviously we all like to play in front of our fans. In the past whenever we have gone down there, there’s been a good support that’s really appreciated by all the players. In the past couple years we’ve got some decent results down there. Hopefully we can give them a good performance and a good result.”
This will be the largest away crowd to watch the Whitecaps play in Seattle since the pandemic.
“Last time we were there a bunch of fans were there as well and it made a big impact,” Tate Johnson said. “It’s great having their support and I know they’ll be loud and rowdy.”
Desperate for a win
The Whitecaps will try to snap a seven-match winless streak across all competitions. Vancouver is currently on a 0-3-4 run of form as they prepare to play three MLS matches in seven days.
“It’s not that we’ve been miles off getting the results,” Gauld said. “We’ve still put in good performances, we’ve just had a couple of breaks go against us here and there. I think we’ll just need to sharpen up a little bit in the final third and do a bit of a better job breaking down teams when they’re setting up a little bit lower.”
The Whitecaps were quickly eliminated from Leagues Cup following a pair of losses at BC Place. Vancouver has yet to win an MLS match since returning from the World Cup break.
“We’ve had a lot of chances and we’ve been punished hard on our mistakes,” Sørensen told reporters on Friday. “Sometimes you get into these situations where you think things are going against you. We had a long run where we don’t even think about that. We just have to be focused and not doubt who we are and what we’re good at.”
Injury updates
Brian White will not be available to play against Seattle. The Whitecaps’ leading goal-scorer worked out on his own during Friday’s session as he works his way back from hamstring tightness that he sustained during the Leagues Cup.

There is a timeline on a potential return for Whitecaps centre back Ranko Veselinovic. The Serbian defender left the Whitecaps match on July 25 after injuring his knee.
Veselinovic is expected to be sidelined 8-12 weeks post-injury with a left knee sprain.
The Whitecaps have two home matches coming up after Sunday, against Houston on Wednesday and Dallas on Aug. 22.
