The Vancouver Whitecaps are about to look a lot more colourful on the pitch.
On Thursday, the club revealed its new third jerseys for the season, which were previously teased last week.
The uniforms are a nod to the Vancouver 86ers, who basically saved the club after the NASL (North American Soccer League) folded back in 1984.
In 1986, a group of individuals purchased the team, and the 86ers joined the Canadian Soccer League (CSL).
“There were 86 of us who initially invested our money to start up the club because we wanted to get professional soccer back in Vancouver,” former 86ers head coach Tom Waiters said back in 2016.
Since then, professional soccer in Vancouver has been a mainstay. And, for the first time, the Whitecaps are paying homage to the squad.
The new uniforms feature the old colours of the 86ers, where blue and yellow were the primary colours, with red trim.
While the kits do their old jerseys justice, the big difference is the logo on the front of the uniform.
On the front of the jersey, there’s a logo that pays homage to the Vancouver ribbon from the 86ers crest, combined with the Pacific dogwood flower.
Fans can purchase the uniforms on the Whitecaps online store for $219.99, with any player’s number on the back.
There are also replica jerseys available for $139.99, anthem jackets for $149.99, and T-shirts for $55.99.
This jersey reveal from the Whitecaps was part of a large initiative from the MLS, celebrating soccer heritage from across the league.
CF Montreal were the other Canadian team to take part in the initiative, with their jerseys commemorating their original away kit from 1993.
The Whitecaps will first wear these new jerseys on Aug. 19 versus Houston Dynamo FC at BC Place. If you’re one of the first 2,000 fans to attend the match, you’ll receive a special edition headband, according to the Whitecaps.
