The Vancouver Police Department is preparing to deploy more than 130 additional officers this weekend in preparation for what it calls “increased protest activity” in the downtown core.
In a release, VPD Sgt. Steve Addison said that the additional officers will help maintain order this weekend, in light of incidents during recent protests and the anticipation that this upcoming weekend will be even busier.
“Everyone has a right to gather lawfully and to peacefully express themselves,” says Sgt. Steve Addison. “Our officers will have a visible presence at protests and gathering spots throughout the city to ensure everyone’s safety.
“We hope people will respect each other’s points of view and rights to express themselves, even if they don’t agree.”

The deployment of additional VPD officers comes after approximately 6,000 people gathered at various locations in Vancouver last weekend to protest several geopolitical issues.
These include the uprising in Tehran, the war in Gaza, and conflicts in the United States.
“While the majority of protesters were peaceful, VPD officers had to physically separate some groups outside the Vancouver Art Gallery to avoid physical conflicts,” said the VPD on social media.
Vancouver Police expect the size and number of protests to increase this weekend, and plan on deploying extra officers on foot and on bikes, as well as those specially trained to manage large crowds.
There are currently 11 planned protests which could draw crowds of up to 10,000 to the downtown core, according to the VPD.

The VPD also stated that there are no planned road closures, but that officers will try to do their best to redirect traffic if it gets impacted.
“Our objective is to maintain order, provide a safe environment for peaceful gatherings, and to minimize disruptions for people who are not involved in the demonstrations,” added Sgt. Addison.
