VPD officers bombarded with racial slurs, profanities during Downtown Eastside call

VPD officers who responded to a call at a Downtown Eastside single-room-occupany (SRO) building this week were bombarded with racial slurs, profanities, and other insults, all by someone who also filmed the incident.

In the video posted online, police can be seen moving through the building while a woman’s voice angrily berates them.

“This f*cker here, he shouldn’t even be a cop,” the woman’s voice says, directing her comments at an officer in the video. She then makes a slew of racist comments, and hurls more profanities at the officer, who is seen calmly walking down the stairs in front of her while she does so.

When reached for comment about the incident, VPD Const. Tania Visintin told Daily Hive the officers in the video “did an outstanding job remaining calm and professional, despite having profanities spoken against them. ”

From watching the video, she said, “it appears the woman needed to be seen by paramedics to be checked on medically.”

And “as much as all our officers want to help those in need, it does become more challenging when the help isn’t welcomed.”

The officers in this incident, “displayed nothing but patience and compassion while assisting the women in need,” she added.
