A 62-year-old man is dead after a serious assault that took place in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside on New Year’s Day, according to law enforcement.

Vancouver Police Department (VPD) reports that officers responded to a call about an assault at Oppenheimer Park. The incident took place just before 1 pm near the basketball court in the northeast corner of the park.

Jesus Cristobal-Esteban, 62, was taken to the hospital by paramedics. He died on Thursday, January 2, as a result of his injuries.

Police say that at this point in time, the identity of the suspect is still unknown.

Police believe, however, that the victim and the suspect had “some sort of interaction” before the assault took place.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the VPD’s homicide detectives at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
