Vancouver Whitecaps on verge of signing new player from Peru

It looks like the Vancouver Whitecaps are on the verge of adding a new player to their roster.

Daily Hive can confirm reports that the Whitecaps are close to signing 22-year-old Peruvian midfielder Kenji Cabrera.

Born in Shiga, Japan, to a Peruvian father and Japanese mother, Cabrera moved to Peru at a young age and holds dual citizenship. He has represented Peru internationally on 14 occasions at the U20 level.

Cabrera has played for FBC Melgar in the Peruvian Primera Division since 2021, scoring 13 goals in 97 appearances. He plays the left-wing position, but has also been used as an attacking midfielder.

The move comes as the Whitecaps are seemingly close to losing Pedro Vite to Liga MX. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder had developed into one of Vancouver’s best players.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Whitecaps do during the next MLS transfer window, which begins July 24. Vancouver has struggled since losing the Concacaf Champions Cup Final in Mexico City, losing four of its last six MLS matches, but still holds the third-best record in the MLS Western Conference.

Overall, the Whitecaps have had a marvellous season despite a slough of injuries. Vancouver should soon get good news on that front, too, as Ryan Gauld is making progress. The Whitecaps’ captain and best player hasn’t played since suffering a knee injury in March.
