Vancouver Whitecaps nearing transfer deal with one of their top players

The Vancouver Whitecaps are closing in on the transfer of Pedro Vite, as the attacking midfielder looks to be heading to Liga MX side UNAM Pumas.

Advance talks between the two clubs were first reported by Manuel Veth of Transfermarkt. The transfer of Vite is not fully across the line, but appears to be nearing a conclusion soon.

The 23-year-old will not train or travel with the Whitecaps as they prepare for two road matches against Houston on Wednesday and San Diego on Saturday. Vite is currently in Vancouver and will take the necessary time to decide on his playing future.

“We have received a new offer and improved offer,” Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster told Daily Hive during training on Monday. “It’s something we’re considering and discussing right now. [Vite] also has got an official offer for him for his side. He needs some time to put his thoughts around this.”

The Whitecaps signed Vite to a contract extension last month through to the end of the 2029 season. The decision to potentially transfer the Ecuadorian international was not initially in the cards.

“As part of the contract negotiations… There was also an agreement that if an offer would come in the future that would satisfy us and our expectations, that he would ask us not to block it,” said Schuster. “That’s sometimes how the world is. A week after we signed the contract, almost at the day that we wanted to announce, two clubs showed up.

“He didn’t see that coming.”

Until the Vite transfer is complete, there’s always the possibility that it could fall apart. The Whitecaps boss would like to reach a decision by the end of the Vancouver road trip.

“These deals are zero per cent done or one 100 per cent done,” Schuster said. “There is not a 50 per cent deal that really happens. We wouldn’t let him not train, if it would not be at the point where it might end up as final.”

In terms of a transfer fee number, Schuster was tight-lipped on an exact figure.

“It’s good enough to replace him,” Schuster said.

Could it be above $5 million?

“It is enough to spend on various players,” Schuster added.

In 105 MLS regular season matches with Vancouver, Vite distributed 20 goal contributions.

More moves coming during MLS transfer window?

The MLS secondary transfer window is open from July 24 to Aug. 21. The Whitecaps have been linked to several key players, but not everyone will end up in Vancouver.

“The names are coming,” Schuster said.

Canadian international defender Luc de Fougerolles earned positive reviews during the Gold Cup and Canadian Shield tournament. After signing a four-year contract extension with Premier League side Fulham FC, could the Whitecaps acquire the 19-year-old on loan?

“This is answering your question that I didn’t even know that he signed with Fulham,” Schuster exclusively told Daily Hive. “If I would have been interested, I would have already known that he re-signed with Fulham.”

Vancouver has been linked to playmaker Petar Stanic. Schuster was also spotted in Serbia scouting the 23-year-old attacking midfielder. Stanic plays for the Serbian side, FK TSC.

“He’s linked to us, and it doesn’t make sense not to confirm that,” Schuster said. “We have been in talks with him because I was there, and I was see,n and people have reported that I was there. I would say there is nothing to update as of now.”

Being a transfer target is one thing; getting a deal across the line is another. The transfer of Stanic to the West Coast remains possible, but a few things need to take place first.

“He’s definitely one of the targets we have,” Schuster said. He will also cost some money, and we have to see that in the whole context of what happens with Pedro, then we will see.”

Then there’s Dominik Fitz. The 26-year-old Austrian midfielder has been linked at various times to the Whitecaps. Fitz currently plays for Austria Wien — does he fit with a potential move to the Whitecaps?

“No, no conversations with him at all,” Schuster said.
