Vancouver had a potentially record-breaking stretch of warm nights

Vancouver has just lived through what looks like its longest run of warm nights ever recorded.

Preliminary data from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) shows that from May 23 through Sept. 25, 2025, the temperature at Vancouver International Airport never dipped below 9°C.

That adds up to 126 consecutive nights, one day longer than the 125-night streak set in 2023.

On the chilliest nights of the stretch, temperatures slipped only to around 9.2°C in late May and mid-June.

Most nights stayed in the mid-teens, with August averaging nearly 15°C for its overnight lows.

But ECCC told Daily Hive that some missing data still needs to be reviewed before it can be declared official.

“The last time we reported a temperature less than 9 degrees at Vancouver International was May 22, so May 23 makes sense,” said Bobby Sekhon, a meteorologist with ECCC.

“But there were some missing days in those records. I can’t say if those days could have been above 9 or not… that’s why it takes longer to investigate.”

Still, he stressed that the bigger story is clear: September nights across the province have been unusually warm.

“We’ve had a warm September, and especially the overnight lows,” Sekhon said.

“Right across the province, we’ve set many overnight minimum temperature records this month.”

Sept. 13 was the standout night.

Nineteen communities set new records, including West Vancouver, which tied its 2009 mark at 15.4°C, Fort St. John, which broke its 1974 record with a low of 12.5°C, and Whistler, which nudged past its 1973 record with 12.3°C.

For Vancouver, where the long-term September minimum hovers around 9°C, a stretch this long without dropping below that line is rare.

Warm nights not only keep homes from cooling off, but they can also strain ecosystems.

Sekhon said the persistence of higher minimums is consistent with broader warming patterns.
