If you love chasing sunsets, tonight marks the last one Vancouver will see at 7 p.m. this year.
According to Time and Date, the sun will rise at 7:05 a.m. and set at exactly 7 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 26.
After today, evenings in the city will grow noticeably shorter, with sunsets slipping into the 6 p.m. hour starting this weekend.
Today’s daylight will last 11 hours and 55 minutes, with the sun rising at 7:05 a.m. and setting exactly at 7 p.m.
The science of shorter days
This seasonal shift is tied to Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun.
Just a few days ago, on Sept. 22, Vancouver marked the autumnal equinox, the moment when day and night were nearly equal in length.
Now, the balance is tipping toward longer nights.
By mid-October, sunsets will arrive before 6:30 p.m., and by December, Vancouverites will see daylight vanish before 4:20 p.m.
Unlike late-August’s clear skies, tonight’s sunset might be a little shy.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is calling for cloudy conditions with a 60 per cent chance of showers this afternoon and periods of rain moving in tonight.
Still, even a moody sky can make for a dramatic backdrop when the sun dips below the horizon.
If you’re hoping to catch the last 7 p.m. sunset, spots like Kits Beach, Spanish Banks, and the Seawall could still offer atmospheric views (expect more misty romance than golden glow, though).
So if you want one last taste of that late-evening summer light, tonight’s your chance.
