A man is recovering after an early-morning stranger attack in Vancouver’s downtown eastside, and the alleged perpetrator has been arrested.

The incident occurred on Sunday, Jan. 18, shortly before 3 a.m., and involved a suspect wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

“A VPD officer patrolling near Hastings and Abbott streets was flagged over around 2:50 a.m. on January 18 by a group of people reporting their friend had just been assaulted by a stranger, who allegedly used a knife to slash the victim’s shoulder,” said Vancouver Police in a release.

The suspect, 29-year-old Heather Pitsanuk, was arrested after a brief foot chase and a taser deployment.

Pitsanuk has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon and one count of assault causing bodily harm.

At the time of her arrest, she was also wanted Canada-wide for breach of parole, and B.C.-wide for failure to comply with a probation order.

VPD also shared that the victim, a 31-year-old man, was treated in hospital and is now recovering.

Metro Vancouver has seen several recent assaults that have caused major injuries.

A Vancouver fast-food cook was attacked after a customer at the restaurant was denied free bacon.

A road rage incident during rush hour in Vancouver sent a 60-year-old woman to the hospital this week with serious injuries.

And a woman in her 60s was the victim of a stranger attack in her Vancouver apartment hallway.
