A violent stranger attack on a Vancouver transit user over the weekend has prompted police to ask the public for help in tracking down the suspect.

The assault took place on the morning of Tuesday, July 7, in the Marpole neighbourhood of Vancouver.

“At approximately 9:25 a.m., a man was waiting for a bus near Southwest Marine Drive and Ash Street, when a male suspect approached from behind, pushed the victim, and ripped headphones that he was wearing off his head,” said the department in a release.

“The suspect then allegedly struck the victim multiple times with a longboard-style skateboard.”

The victim of the “unprovoked assault” managed to flee the attacker while calling 911.

VPD added that the victim sustained minor injuries to his forearm and that the investigation is active and ongoing.

“Investigators are releasing a cellphone photo of the suspect and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or drivers who may have dashcam footage from the area on Tuesday, to contact the VPD non-emergency line at 604-717-3321.”

Metro Vancouver has seen several recent assaults that have caused major injuries.

A Vancouver jogger, a mom, and a young child were attacked by a stranger on a busy bridge in early May.

The incident was witnessed by Vancouver Police Department officers, with one officer activating his vehicle’s emergency lights and sirens to draw the suspect’s attention away from the victims.

A man who allegedly left a woman bleeding from her head in a suspected Vancouver stranger attack in June was also released back into the community just 48 hours later.

VPD shared that a woman suffered significant injuries after being hit with a piece of wood on Kits Beach just before 2 p.m. on June 28.

“Witnesses described the weapon as a piece of lumber or driftwood about the size and thickness of a baseball bat,” VPD said.
