A community erupted in uproar and sadness after it was announced that Bayside Lounge, a Vancouver bar and restaurant that has been around for nearly five decades, was closing.
Earlier this month, Dished Vancouver reported that after 47 years, Bayside Lounge would be closing.
Bayside Lounge is located in the West End and is best known for its cocktails and the view of English Bay. It first opened its doors in 1979, and Oct. 30 marks its very last day.
In response, a demonstration has been scheduled for this evening, with organizers saying the event marks an opportunity for Bayside patrons and the wider community to show up and “make their voices heard.”
“Business moves like this rely on communities to remain passive until the outrage blows over. Don’t be passive. Let’s show that this community stands behind spaces like the Bayside, not the landlords or businesses that put their own interests ahead of the neighbourhoods they operate in,” the Eventbrite page states.
The Eventbrite page says that the demonstration begins at 7:30 p.m., outside on Davie Street.
“Let’s come together to show our support for The Bayside Lounge.”
Rumours swirled about the potential reasoning behind the closure, which Dished Vancouver debunked after the closure announcement.
Following the news of the closure, many began to blame the sushi restaurant next door, Lucky Sushi Co., for allegedly outbidding Bayside Lounge on rent and adding that the restaurant planned to expand into the space. Dished Vancouver later confirmed those rumours weren’t true.
“To our regulars, neighbours, visitors, DJs and every team member who has been part of Bayside over the years — thank you. You’ve made this much more than a lounge. You’ve made it a place for friendships, celebrations, and memories that will stay with us,” Bayside said in its original closure announcement.
“We know this news will be deeply felt by our entire bayside family. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing memories, celebrating our people, and welcoming you back to enjoy Bayside together. Whether you’ve been coming for decades or only recently found us, we’d love to see you before our final night. Come raise a glass, share a story, and help us celebrate 47 unforgettable years,” Bayside added.
Dished Vancouver contacted Bayside, which is aware of the demonstration.
It told Dished that it’s very grateful for the support that the community showed since the closure announcement.
“It’s an incredibly difficult day for us and for the wider West End community,” Bayside said.
It adds that it hopes to see everyone come down for one last night at the Bayside Lounge.
“It would mean a lot to have the community together to celebrate the memories and say goodbye.”
