Vancouver ranked one of the best cities in the world in 2021
Vancouver has been ranked among the top cities in the world, according to Resonance Consultancy’s World Best Cities Report of 2021.
The ranking is released annually, and this year, Vancouver placed 34th – just after Dublin, Ireland, and just before Boston, and it is the second-highest Canadian city on the list.
Resonance Consultancy ranks the world’s cities with populations of one million or more, based on categories ranging from the physical place, prosperity, and people. The categories that they take into consideration are; place, product prosperity, programming and promotion.
Vancouver’s key areas of impression included people and universities. According to Resonance Consultancy, the city ranked fifth in the people category due to both “educational attainment and foreign-born workers.”
The University of British Columbia was nodded to as “a draw for the next generation of Vancouver’s increasingly global citizenry,” and it was noted that Silicon Valley and Seattle tech giants create plenty of career opportunities as well.

One shortcoming, and perhaps unsurprisingly, was that Vancouver lost points based on its real estate market and high “price of entry.” The ranking says that “Vancouver’s housing prices are now mostly hitched to a global context, largely decoupled from local wages.”
The city did, however, receive praise alongside Canada for its “pro-active response to and containment” of the pandemic, which “has endeared the city to even more global nomads who can work from anywhere.”
Besides Vancouver, Toronto made this year’s list at 13, Montreal is at 41, with Calgary following in 47, and Ottawa at 67. Edmonton is also in the top 100 at number 76.
