University of British Columbia named one of the top 40 universities in the world

The University of British Columbia placed 34th in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The ranking, released this week, also features the University of Toronto and Montreal’s McGill University which placed 18th and 40th respectively.

UBC placed in the same spot last year. Hamilton’s McMaster University ranked at number 69.

The report lists over 1,500 universities in the world and claims to be the  “only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.”

Universities were ranked on 13 criteria, including teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlooks.

England’s University of Oxford placed first on the list for the fifth year in a row, while the US is home to eight of the top 10 universities in 2021.

Canada’s top five universities, according to the rankings are:

  1. University of Toronto (18)
  2. University of British Columbia (34)
  3. McGill University (40)
  4. McMaster University (69)
  5. University of Montreal (73)
