Legendary Vancouver radio reporter named as Surrey council candidate

Surrey politics are heating up as Surrey First mayoral hopeful Linda Annis announced potential candidates for her party’s council, including a former Vancouver radio personality.

Annis announced she was running for mayor at the beginning of September, and yesterday, she announced some of the candidates for her council, including Janet Brown, a longtime Global News and CKNW radio personality.

The news comes almost exactly one year after Brown announced on Mornings with Simi Sara that she was moving on from radio, having spent decades with the station, and Sara referred to Brown as a legendary reporter. Brown, an award-winning journalist, spent over 30 years with CKNW and Global News.

Since leaving the Vancouver radio and media scene, Brown has been the director of communications with the Surrey Urban Mission. She says she plans to earn every vote and looks forward to the opportunity to serve her community.

The potential council appointment is fitting as Brown was known for her reporting on Surrey and the Fraser Valley.

“As a reporter, I had the chance to see every side of Surrey, and I know how much potential we have as a community. Linda will tap into that potential as mayor, and I want to be part of the team that puts Surrey first as we build our future as the biggest city in the province,” Brown said.

Annis announced three other candidates along with Brown: Taj Sandhu, Clint Stewart, and Deb Antifaev.

“We have a lot of catching up to do because Brenda Locke and her four councillors have spent their entire term trying to stop, stall or derail the police transition. Every other priority was put on the back burner,” Annis said, adding that voters deserve a mayor and council that can manage multiple issues at the same time.

Stewart is the president of Whalley Little League and is deeply involved in the local sports community. He also has a 26-year career with GardaWorld Cash Solutions and graduated from the Justice Institute of B.C.

Sandhu is vice president of WBI Home Warranty and has over 25 years of experience in the construction and development sectors.

Antifaev has spent over 26 years advocating for children with special needs and is currently a director at Families for Early Autism Treatment (FEAT BC).

B.C.’s municipal elections are still a year away, scheduled to take place on Oct. 17, 2026.
