The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is offering a reward for anyone who offers “key information” relating to extortion in the city.
“The Surrey Extortion Reward Fund is one of the largest police rewards in Canadian history, and it has been put in place to help incentivize people to come forward with the information they have,” SPS said.
Anyone who can provide “specific information that leads to an arrest and conviction can receive up to $100,000.”
That $100,000 is of a possible $250,000 total in the extortion fund. The funding is in partnership with the City of Surrey, and the amount was approved by Surrey City Council.

According to the SPS, the reward comes as many folks in the community, many from a South Asian background, are dealing with extortion threats. The SPS calls it a trend.
“We are currently seeing a trend across Canada – including in Surrey – where individuals and businesses in predominantly South Asian communities are receiving threatening demands for money by letters, phone calls, text messages, or social media.”
As of Sept. 15, when the fund was launched, the SPS was actively investigating 44 extortion cases. Of those cases, 27 involved shootings.
“Individuals with information are asked to call the Surrey Extortion Tip Line at 236-485-5149. This tip line will be monitored by Surrey Police investigators, seven days a week, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Punjabi-speaking officers will be available as required.”
Payments will only be issued if the information provided leads to identification, prosecution and conviction.
