Vancouver's Park Theatre closing after over 80 years in operation

A popular Vancouver theatre that has been a community staple for over 80 years is sadly closing this weekend.

Park Theatre, located on Cambie Street, will have its final day of operation this weekend, according to a statement Daily Hive Urbanized received from Cineplex Communications Coordinator Alannah O’Farrell.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to close our The Park Theatre location, but we look forward to welcoming guests to our nearby locations: Fifth Avenue Cinemas, Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver, and Cineplex Odeon International Village Cinemas,” O’Farrell told Daily Hive Urbanized.

“Our final day of operation will be Oct. 26, 2025. We’re grateful to the community for their support over the past 12 years.”

For folks who enjoy watching the 70mm films at Park, there’s still hope that the theatre’s projector will live on elsewhere.

“It is worth noting that we will be removing the 70mm projector and installing it at another Cineplex location, which is yet to be confirmed,” O’Farrell added.

According to Wikipedia, the theatre was renovated in the 2000s, with around $300,000 spent on improvements.

The theatre initially opened in 1941 and was originally run by Odeon Theatres. Odeon Theatres eventually became Cineplex Odeon Theatres, which decided not to renew Park’s lease in 1990.

Festival Cinemas took over the lease until Cineplex Entertainment bought the theatre 12 years ago in 2013.

While you could catch the typical assortment of Cineplex movies at Park Theatre, the venue was also used as a space for VIFF and other special screenings.

This marks the third beloved movie theatre closing in and around Metro Vancouver over the last two years. In 2024, we learned that Twilight Drive-In was closing, and earlier this year, we learned that Hollywood 3 in Pitt Meadows was closing to much dismay.
