The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has revealed some information about what appears to be the city’s first homicide of 2026.
According to a media release from the department, a man was stabbed near East 10th Avenue and Commercial Drive earlier this week.
The stabbing occurred on Tuesday night.
VPD says that police responded to an incident at around 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 20 after reports that a man had been stabbed.
The victim was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have identified the victim as 48-year-old Christopher Jumal Sanderson, and so far, no arrests have been made in connection with the reported stabbing.
The VPD is hoping that anyone who may have information related to this stabbing contact the VPD Homicide Section by calling 604-717-2541.
That area of Commercial Drive where the alleged stabbing took place is often quite busy with foot traffic, as there are many restaurants nearby, along with convenience stores and busy retailers.
This stabbing marks the second over the past week. On Jan. 20, VPD reported that a 31-year-old man was stabbed in a reported stranger attack. The victim of that attack was treated at a hospital and is recovering.
In 2025, the first homicide in Vancouver wasn’t reported until March.
