First held in 1973, the race now attracts some of the world’s top cyclists, and has been won by riders from Canada, the US, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, Germany, and Sweden.
American rider Tina Pic, the oldest cyclist in the race at the age of 50, took the women’s crown after 35 laps (42km) of gruelling racing. Meanwhile her fellow countryman Eric Young took the men’s crown, which was shortened to 40 laps after a fire alarm went off in one of the buildings lining the Gastown course.
