Summer Saturdays are here again! From East Side Pride to Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo, here are 10 fun events to check out on June 22!

Dog Days of Summer at Hastings Racecourse

What: The Dog Days of Summer series is returning to Hastings Racecourse. On the weekend of June 22 and 23 are the heartwarming Corgi Races. Last year, we saw the inaugural corgi races bring adorable (and hysterical) moments to the North Renfrew race track, with four-legged athletes competing for the “Top Corgi” prize. On the weekend of July 13 and 14, you can take in all of the action at the iconic Wiener Dog Races at Hastings Racecourse. Enjoy a pack of incredibly excited Dachshunds racing.

East Side Pride 2019

What: Celebrate Pride at the annual free and all-ages East Side Pride Festival. Take in an array of diverse performances, visit the Community Market with over 30 vendors and Community Partners, and grab a bite to eat at a food truck. East Side Pride is directly beside a large playground and mini water park, and features several activities for children. Families welcome.

East Side Pride is also partnering with Saige Community Food Bank who will be firing up the grill and dishing out veggie and meat hot dogs at affordable prices – all proceeds support Saige Community Food Bank. Visit their bbq, play games for a chance to win prizes, learn how you can access resources year-round, and support Saige.

Pacific Assistance Dogs Society Open House

What: Free fun for the whole family. Tour PADS’ training facility, watch assistance dog demonstrations, and meet the PADS Puppies. Plus enjoy the BBQ lunch and meet the guest speakers Assistance dogs welcome. Please, no pets.

Terminal City Roller Derby Seawall Brawl

What: Come celebrate summer in Vancouver and watch Team Terminal City take on the Smokin’ Laces at this free outdoor bout! There will be beach blanket bleachers and a lawn chair penalty box. Whistle at 10:30 am. Bring your swimsuit, sunscreen and smiles.

Newfoundland Kitchen Party

What: Experience a traditional East Coast style lobster dinner without leaving the West Coast. Traditional maritime music will be performed by the band the Navvies. Beers from local breweries will be available for purchase and coolers for those that do not like beer. There will also be hot dog dinners for guests that do not want a lobster.

Scandinavian Midsummer Festival

What: Thousands of people visit the Scandinavian Community Centre every year to celebrate the traditions and festivities of Scandinavian Midsummer. In 2019, it will be the 24th time a Midsummer Festival is held, with fun-filled activities, living history and non-stop entertainment for the whole family.

Undertones of Green: Paintings by June Yun

What: An exhibition of Undertones of Green: Paintings by June Yun at Lipont Place. Free admission with artworks available for purchase.

Park Play Palooza

City of Surrey

What: Since 2006, Park Play Palooza is the annual kick-off event for Surrey’s free Park Play drop-in summer program for kids. Dance to live entertainment by the Langley Ukulele Ensemble, watch a dazzling magic show at 12 pm. play games, meet the Park Play staff and friendly bird mascot, Pip, and more. Plus get your Park Play summer passport and enter the prize draw.

Cloverdale Market Days

NOSH Foodie Fest

What: NOSH Foodie Fest is a weekly, food-centric event taking place in the parking lot at Capilano Mall every Saturday in June. This free to attend event centred around food truck-hopping will tempt one’s taste buds, fill one’s belly, and no doubt put all foodies into a legit food coma. Rounding out the tantalizing event menu will be other activities including the “PB & Jam” DJ Booth and “There’s A Little Something On Your Face” Face Painting Station.

We Are the Body

What: Inspired by the life and faith of Richard Wurmbrand, We Are the Body follows the stories of Elsie, Micah and Richard, three prisoners of conscience confined in a Soviet jail in post-war Romania. As they communicate through the walls of their cells via Morse code, memories of the past and visions for the future provide temporary relief from the brutal reality of their existence, yet force them to question what they truly believe. An abridged version of Canadian playwright Andrew Kooman’s script, produced by Pacific Theatre apprentice Kira Fondse, and directed by Mikayla Wust. Presented in association with Pacific Theatre as part of the Stone’s Throw Festival Apprentice Series.
