An Evening with Tarana Burke

What: Tarana Burke, founder of the “Me Too” Movement and advocate for survivors of sexual violence, is featured at an evening marking the 40th anniversary of Battered Women’s Support Services and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The evening includes a screening of BWSS 40 years later documentary, plus performances by DJ Kookum, Leah McFly, Wildflower, Tonye Aganaba, and M’Girl.

There is Truth Here: Creativity and Resilience in Children’s Art from Indian Residential and Day Schools

What: There is Truth Here is the feature exhibition at the Museum of Vancouver. The exhibit showcases rare surviving artworks created by children who attended the Inkameep Day School (Okanagan), St Michael’s Indian Residential School (Alert Bay), the Alberni Indian Residential School (Vancouver Island), and Mackay Indian Residential School (Manitoba). Experiences of the survivors are shared through their childhood artworks. Curated by Andrea Walsh, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Victoria, and originally displayed at the Legacy Art Gallery in Victoria.

The Christmas Store at Potters

Potter’s Nursery

What: Potters Nursery has made its annual transformation into the 28,000-sq-ft Christmas Store at Potters. Themed areas include a 3,000-sq-ft “Dark Room,” illuminated by themed tree-lights, Petland, and the Nutcracker Room, to name a few. New this year is the store’s very own Whoville, a space dedicated to a wide variety of Grinch-themed items, such as teddy bears, ornaments, mugs, and snow globes.

In addition over 50,000 themed ornaments, toys, games, and stocking stuffers for both kids, adults, and pets, the store will offer food demos and live music on weekends to liven up the Christmas atmosphere.

Kavuus Black Friday Sale

What: Canadian furniture company Kavuus has already kicked off their Black Friday Sale, and it’s running right through Monday, December 2. Kavuus is based in BC where the company manufactures every piece of furniture they make, and since they sell directly to customers online, all orders are processed with a quick turnaround. Kavuus has a full range of modern and mid-century pieces to suit every kind of space.

What: On November 26, join Boris Wertz, founding partner of Version One VC, in conversation with Hayley Woodin of Business in Vancouver. Wertz is one of the top early-stage tech investors in North America. He’s a board partner with Andreessen Horowitz and is known for his ability to find the next generation of leaders. Currently, he’s focused on crypto/blockchain, marketplaces, and SaaS.

Before he was an investor, Wertz successfully built AbeBooks.com — an online marketplace for used and out-of-print books, which was later acquired by Amazon. Christmas Glow Vancouver

What: Christmas Glow will take place inside the Harbour Convention Centre, and visitors will be able to enjoy nearly 50,000 sq. ft. of enchanting twinkling lights and holiday activities.

This year’s theme for Vancouver is “Santa’s Lost Presents.” Guests will be able to help the elves find Santa’s lost presents. Themed light-up structures, including Santa’s sleigh and his trusty reindeer, will be set up around the venue. Adults will be able to enjoy the licensed bars, seasonal beverages, and live music while interactive activities and festive playgrounds will keep the kids busy.

Bright Nights at Stanley Park 2019

What: Bright Nights at Stanley Park features over three million dazzling lights decorating acres of the dark forest, reaching as high as the forest canopy for all to see and enjoy. The attraction in the heart of the park is also accompanied by a train ride, music, snacks, entertainment, and even visits with Santa and his elves.

The annual tradition, now in its 22nd year, is operated and installed by 800 firefighters – a task that requires 8,000 hours of set-up over three months. Bright Nights attracts 200,000 visitors every year, with all proceeds benefiting the Burn Fund, which provides life-saving, life-supporting, and life-enriching services to people in BC.
