Vancouver Canucks have soured on Dakota Joshua and may trade him: report

Vancouver Canucks management doesn’t appear to be nearly as high on Dakota Joshua as they were a year ago.

After an impressive 18-goal, 32-point season in 2023-24, the Canucks chose to sign Joshua to a four-year, $13-million extension with an average annual value of $3.25 million. His numbers reduced drastically in the first season following that extension, however, as he managed just seven goals and 14 points in 57 games.

Now in a tough cap situation and still hoping to come up with the money to re-sign Pius Suter, the Canucks appear to be looking to trade Joshua, who, as per CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal, management has soured on.

“I really am hearing the Canucks are souring on Dakota Joshua for some odd reason,” Dhaliwal said. “His name is out there.”

Joshua does have some say over his future, as he has a 12-team no-trade list in his contract. His limited production in 2024-25 may also make him difficult to move given his current cap hit, though the 29-year-old has shown what he’s capable of when at his best.

Dhaliwal also mentioned the possibility of moving Teddy Blueger in order to create cap space for Suter. The 30-year-old, who has one more season remaining on his contract with a $1.8 million cap hit, scored eight goals and 28 points in 82 games this past season.

“They called [Suter’s] agent yesterday, and they told him they are still interested, the door is still open. They’ve gotta move either Joshua or Blueger to get back in on Suter. Suter is going to sign today or tomorrow.”

As per PuckPedia, the Canucks have only roughly $556,000 in cap space. Suter, who is coming off a career season in which he scored 25 goals and 46 points, is projected by AFP Analytics to sign a four-year deal with a cap hit of just under $5 million. Should he indeed be looking for that much, it may make it difficult for the Canucks to pull off even if they are to move Joshua.
