What: Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY presents the world premiere of @giselle, a technology-infused reimagining of the ballet masterwork. @giselle looks at how social media has leveraged an unexpected change on modern love and relationships. Choreographed by Joshua Beamish and featuring ballet artists from American Ballet Theatre, The National Ballet of Canada, and Pennsylvania Ballet.

A Tender Thing by Ben Power

What: A Tender Thing asks the questions what if Romeo and Juliet didn’t die in that double suicide in the Capulet family vault? Instead, what if they lived into old age and faced a more commonplace tragedy? Find out in Ben Power’s take on Shakespeare’s love story.

New Play Festival

A Thousand Splendid Suns

Mother of the Maid

What: Pacific Theatre’s Mother of the Maid features the tale of Isabelle Arc, who knows what her teenage daughter Joan needs: discipline, a loving husband, and to stop communing with God. As Joan heads towards her destiny of becoming the Maid of Orleans, Isabelle must care for a daughter who belongs not just to her, but to all of France.

RENT 20th Anniversary Tour

What: Broadway Across Canada presents the RENT 20th Anniversary Tour. This Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning original rock musical will be at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from September 17 to 22. RENT follows the lives of seven artists who struggle to chase their dreams in New York City without selling out. The show was groundbreaking at its time, opening its first show in 1996. Written and composed by Johnathan Larson, it was a memorial to his friends who died from an epidemic of AIDS.

The Ballad Of Frank Allen

What: Australia’s Shane Adamczak and Canadian Al Lafrance team up for The Ballad Of Frank Allen, a show about a mild-mannered janitor being shrunk and getting stuck in another man’s beard.

The Shipment

What: The Shipment by Korean-American playwright Young Jean Lee, features five Black actors – Andrew Creightney, Chris Francisque, Omari Newton, Adrian Neblett, and Kiomi Pyke – playing what is described as a “bad b-list of Black iconography: Video Ho, Crackhead John, Bad Cop, Standup Comedian, Drug Dealer Mama, Grandma from Heaven, and Record Company Executive, to name just a few.” The stereotypes are mashed-up with clichés, distortions, and sleights of hand to encourage the audience to confront their own bias.
