'Most-beloved' Vancouver Aquarium sloth Hurricane passes away

Hurricane, a sloth that the Vancouver Aquarium called its “most beloved,” has passed away.

The Vancouver Aquarium announced the news on its Instagram page earlier today, revealing that Hurricane was 29 years old.

According to the Vancouver Aquarium, Hurricane had been receiving specialized geriatric care and close monitoring from the aquarium’s veterinary team.

“Hurricane held a special place in the hearts of our team and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was known for the unique bond she shared with her keepers and trainers, whom she enjoyed interacting with each day,” the aquarium said.

Sloths live around 29 to 30 years in the wild, so this wasn’t an early death as we’ve seen with some animals in the care of zoos or aquariums.

The aquarium said that Hurricane “was able to participate in her own healthcare” through strong relationships and cooperative training.

“This allowed our veterinary team to collect valuable health data, including blood samples and ultrasound measurements, all of which played an important role in guiding her care and supporting her well-being,” the aquarium added.

The aquarium said that Hurricane had a curious nature, and that interactions between her and the public created “meaningful moments” for those who cared for her and those who had the opportunity to meet her.

“Her presence brought joy to countless visitors and created lasting memories for our team.”

The Vancouver Aquarium said that the health, welfare, and safety of animals in its care are the institution’s highest priority.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone who knew, loved, and visited Hurricane throughout her remarkable life. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered,” it said.

Several people have replied to the aquarium’s post, expressing their sadness about the passing of Hurricane.

“Oh I’m so sorry to hear, we loved spotting Hurricane at the aquarium,” one reply said.

“My kids will never forget seeing her climb across the enclosures,” said another visitor.
