Original story: Tsunami risk for British Columbia is being evaluated following a magnitude 8.1 earthquake that struck north of New Zealand.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the seismic event in question took place on Thursday morning at 11:28 am PST in the Kermadec Islands area of New Zealand.

The USGS says that the earthquake had a depth of 19.4 km. It’s also one of many that have occurred near New Zealand over the past several hours.

Emergency Info BC says that tsunami risk is still being evaluated following the seismic activity.
“After an earthquake, evaluations are done to produce the most accurate tsunami assessment possible,” Emergency Info BC says in a tweet. “This data will inform the final threat level for BC. Standby for more info.”
