Thousands of local social media users have been fooled into following fake accounts promising free gift cards to new followers.

The accounts, which claim to represent Tsawwassen Mills stores such as adidas, Sephora, Nike, Sport Chek, and even A&W, offer gift cards ranging from $100 to $500 for social media followers who follow them.

Using logos as avatars and convincing handles, the accounts have already duped thousands of Vancouverites into following them. However, according to a spokesperson for the newly opened outlet mall, none of the accounts are actually real.

“The Instagram accounts claiming to be Tsawwassen Mills retailers offering gift cards to new followers are fake,”Kristina Shier, Marketing Director at Tsawwassen Mills said. “We are in the process of identifying and reporting these accounts to Instagram to ensure they are shut down. We encourage shoppers to visit our website for an official list of retailer promotions.”
