Nearly 350,000 trips were made across the Canadian and US border in July.

July marked the fourth full month since travel restrictions have been in place, after being introduced in March. Statistics Canada has released data on international travel both to and from Canada.

Compared to 2019, the agency says that there was a 95% decrease in trips between Canada and the US this year. July 2019 saw 7,900,000 trips made, while only 347,100 were made in July 2020.

Statistics Canada says that despite the massive year-over-year drop, there was still an 11.1% increase in cross-border travel seen in June.

Additionally, it appears that most of these trips were Canadians returning from the US. Statistics Canada says that 233,700 return trips were made, the vast majority of which were by car. Of those, 176,000 were described as “same-day” trips.

In total, US residents made 113,400 trips to Canada in July, most of which were by car and one-day crossings.

There was also a staggering decrease in overseas travel compared to 2019. Arrivals in Canada from overseas countries dropped 97.4%, from 1,100,000 to 28,400.

Data from the agency says that most of these people came from the United Kingdom, China, and France.
