Desperate times call for desperate measures, as TransLink has confirmed it is rolling out the next phases of temporary suspensions to 47 bus routes this month, along with curtailed frequencies on the remaining routes in operation to at least a weekend frequency or less.

These latest service reductions are staggering, adding to the decreased frequencies and suspensions that were already made in March, and especially in April, when 18 routes were suspended.

Even the 99 B-Line and the remaining four newly launched RapidBus routes in operation will run on Saturday and Sunday schedules.

But TransLink reasons that they are necessary to slow down its burn on its cash reserves given the uncertainty with emergency operating funding from federal and provincial governments.

The public transit authority saw a revenue shortfall of $75 million per month at the start of the pandemic, but with the service cuts and layoffs, it has been able to narrow down the gap to $50 million. Over 60% of TransLink’s revenues depend on fare, fuel tax, and parking tax revenues, which have fallen off into a void.

TransLink is projecting a revenue shortfall of up to $680 million for 2020 and $885 million for 2021. The full fiscal impact stretching over several years could be up to $3.25 billion, more than the cost of the full SkyTrain extension to Langley.

The cuts to bus services affect routes that have seen low to zero ridership. Affected riders can use alternate bus routes that travel through the areas of cancelled routes, but in some cases there will be no alternative public transit option.

Starting on June 1, TransLink is aiming to recoup some of the lost fare revenue on buses by reinstating fare collection through the installation of temporary vinyl driver barriers. Physical distancing measures that reduce seat capacity by 50% and ban standing capacity will still be in effect, but the rear door boarding-only policy will end.
