Traffic stop to nab erratic driver ends in stolen RCMP cruiser

Jun 24 2019, 10:35 pm

A late-night traffic stop that took place last Friday resulted in an RCMP cruiser being briefly stolen.

On June 21, a frontline officer from the Surrey RCMP conducted a traffic stop on what police are calling an “erratic driver.”

The incident took place at approximately 11:34 pm near the 13600 Block of 100th Avenue in Surrey.

According to a police report, the car evaded all police efforts to stop it, before entering into an underground parkade in a nearby building.

Police say the two occupants of the vehicle were initially cooperative with police direction, however, they both attempted to flee on foot, causing the officer to chase the driver.

The passenger then managed to enter and drive the officer’s vehicle, crashing through the parkade gate before escaping the area.

RCMP have since located and recovered the police vehicle, abandoned in the 9800 blocks of Whalley Boulevard.

One individual believed to be involved in the matter has been arrested by police and remains in custody on an outstanding warrant.

The second suspect remains at large.

Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
