Drivers welcome changes at busy Metro Vancouver intersection

Traffic changes along Canada Way and Kensington Avenue in Burnaby are being welcomed by some Metro Vancouver drivers.

Those familiar with the area know the two designated lanes lead to Highway 1 (eastbound and westbound) or straight on to Kensington Avenue.

However, often, drivers would cut across the solid white line along Canada Way to enter these two lanes, causing traffic to stall and potentially leading to collisions.

Drivers have recently noticed that delineators have been installed in this area to prevent cars from cutting across.

“Hopefully this will curb the morons cutting three lanes,” wrote one person online. “But at least it’s finally some effort by Burnaby.”

Daily Hive contacted the city to confirm the changes; however, a spokesperson noted that this area is in the province’s jurisdiction.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit confirmed it installed the delineators on June 1, in order to “deter aggressive driving behaviour, specifically of drivers crossing the solid white line while heading westbound on Canada Way.”

It appears that many drivers are pleased with the changes to the busy intersection.

“God, that took long enough,” stated one individual on the Burnaby subreddit. “Have to drive straight through that intersection twice a day, and no matter how hard I try to be calm, there’s always a new trick every day.”

“Thank god,” echoed another commenter. “I’m glad I don’t have to use this road to come home from work anymore, but it was god awful when I did a few years ago.”

“Excellent!!!” said one driver.

Someone else noted that while they agreed with the implementation of the delineators, they added that something needs to be done “about the fact that people wanting to go westbound on the highway get stuck there for an extra 20 minutes at the least.”

Others said they felt concerned that the delineators may not do enough and could prompt drivers to try to sneak in a right turn at Canada Way onto Kensington Avenue, after the traffic island.

“I think that would further encourage drivers to turn after the island instead,” said one person.

“Update: going through there today around 4 p.m….I think there are actually more people doing the illegal right turn now as they can’t cut in last minute anymore,” added another.

Do you think these delineators will prevent bad driving behaviour at this Metro Vancouver intersection? Let us know in the comments.
