'Not normal': North Vancouver traffic chaos leaves drivers stuck for hours on Sunday

Folks who headed to North Vancouver on Sunday to enjoy the weekend heat were stuck in hours of traffic, making for a chaotic commute.
“I know traffic over the bridge gets really bad on the weekends, but I feel like today was extremely bad,” wrote one person about the Sunday commute on the Vancouver subreddit page.
“I was trying to get to Burnaby from Park Royal today so I tried taking the R2 [bus] around 4 p.m. The bus never came after waiting an hour, so I decided to take an Uber. But the traffic around the mall was so bad, and also Uber couldn’t navigate inside the mall, so it took a while for the driver to pick me up.”
They said that they were stuck for almost another hour near Keith Road, trying to get onto Highway 1.
Others in the comments agreed that Sunday traffic in North Vancouver felt busier than usual, especially for those headed southbound on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge.
“Can confirm today was especially awful. Loathe being stuck north of the bridge,” said one person.
“Born and raised on the north shore, and today was as bad as I’ve ever seen it,” remarked another local.
A commenter added that Sunday’s traffic was “definitely not normal” due to an accident on the bridge.
According to Drive BC, a vehicle accident at the bridge’s north end on Sunday afternoon had the southbound and centre lanes blocked and the northbound lane.

This likely resulted in the hours-long delays for commuters.
One local who has lived in North Vancouver for a decade added several other factors, such as people heading to the city for outdoor activities, as well as drivers returning from Horseshoe Bay and Whistler, which likely contributed to the traffic jam.
