Update: The Coquitlam RCMP say that the two-year-old boy involved in the incident has passed away from his injuries. At this point in time, “neither speed nor impairment appears to be factors” in the collision, say police.

At this early stage this appears to be a tragic event without any indication of criminal behaviour or negligence, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP.

We’re asking that all parents be extra-careful to hold their children’s hands near busy streets, and for drivers to be extra-watchful for kids who may do something unexpected.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage is asked to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550.

Police are investigating after a pedestrian collision involving a mother and her toddler.

The Coquitlam RCMP say that the incident occurred on Monday at approximately 6:30 pm, near Tantalus Court and Pinetree Way.

The collision involved one vehicle, the mother, and a two-year-old child, say police.

The two-year-old child is suffering from life-threatening injuries and the mother sustained serious injuries.

“Their medical status is unknown at this time,” say Coquitlam RCMP in a statement.

Investigators also arrived on the scene shortly after, with the surrounding area being closed until approximately 1:15 am.

Police say that the investigation is in the early stages and that no further details are being released.
