The Tyler Myers trade saga appears to be in the 11th hour.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Friday on The FAN Hockey Show that there was “hope” that there would be clarity on his situation by the end of the weekend.
On Saturday, NHL insider Frank Seravalli wrote that Myers is “warming” to the idea of moving his family to another city.
Seravalli also mentioned that three teams are currently in the running for Myers.
Unsurprisingly, both Seravalli and CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal have said that the Dallas Stars are the preferred situation.
An interesting wrinkle to the link between Dallas and Vancouver is the fact that the Stars made a roster move on Friday to open up cap space for a potential trade.
The Stars announced that Tyler Seguin has been ruled out for the rest of the season, including playoffs, due to an ACL injury suffered earlier in the season.
That means Dallas can shift his cap hit over to long-term injured reserve. They were accruing cap space daily after his initial injury, but under the new NHL rules, they’ve freed up the entirety of his $9.85 million cap hit.
Dallas could theoretically add Myers and still have the cap space to add another player. They’ve previously been linked to Calgary Flames forward Blake Coleman, who used to play for the Stars and spent the Olympic break down in Dallas. Not only that, but his family is reportedly staying down there right now, instead of going back to Calgary.
If the deal between Myers and the Stars doesn’t work out, the other top two suitors are the Detroit Red Wings and the Anaheim Ducks, according to Seravalli.
As Dhaliwal reported yesterday, the fact that Myers is taking his time means he’s considering the move to Detroit.
In the past, other NHL players have immediately nixed a trade. Canucks fans might remember that as retired defenceman Jason Demers refused to waive his no-trade clause to come to Vancouver.
The Ducks would really be adding some nastiness to their blueline if Myers were to join them. Anaheim already employs physical defencemen such as Jacob Trouba and Radko Gudas. All three of Trouba, Gudas and Myers play the right side.
If Anaheim were to swing the deal, they certainly have the assets to get a trade done. They have all of their draft picks in the 2026 draft, along with three third-rounders in 2027.
