Don’t be surprised to see another trade or two involving the Calgary Flames ahead of the March 6 trade deadline.
GM Craig Conroy got things going ahead of the Olympic trade freeze, sending Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights just over one month ago. The 29-year-old defenceman was the one player on this roster who needed to be moved, though he may not wind up being the only one.
The Flames, who sit 29th in NHL standings, have a number of other players that teams would like to add. Nazem Kadri is at the top of that list, though others such as Ryan Lomberg, Joel Hanley, and Brayden Pachal would be much easier to add as depth options.
While any of the players mentioned above could be moved, it’s veteran winger Blake Coleman who may be the most likely of them all to be wearing a new uniform this season.
In a recent appearance on DLLS Sports, Sportsnet’s Eric Francis confirmed that while Coleman has returned to Calgary following the Olympic break, his family has stayed back in Texas. While it could be unrelated, this does feel like an unusual situation, and one that may suggest the 34-year-old winger feels he could be on the move soon.
Sportsnet’s Eric Francis said on our @DLLS_Stars show that Blake Coleman came back to Dallas for the Olympic break.
And his family is staying in Dallas for the remainder of the season, not going back to Calgary…

“It’s the situation that we’re in,” Coleman said on Thursday when asked about the trade speculation. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t aware of everything and not keeping up with it. There’s a lot of moving pieces at this stage of life with family and kids. It’s not just me anymore.
“But it’s been good. The dialogue’s been open and pretty clear. I’ve always looked at it the same from day one, I’m a Flame until I’m told I’m not.”
Coleman is in the fifth year of a six-year, $29.4-million deal, which carries a $4.9 million cap hit. He’s having a strong season with 13 goals in 44 games and should bring in a nice haul for the Flames should he wind up being moved ahead of the trade deadline.
