Part two of the Jay DeMerit Rise story begins with a ridiculous eye surgery that came within hours of costing him his lone World Cup trip.
After competing for the US in South Africa, Jay was then signed to the Vancouver Whitecaps and became the team’s first MLS captain. As a fan favourite, he starred in his defending role for the Caps at Empire Stadium before moving under the roof in BC Place.
Jay would eventually retire as one of the best to ever wear the jersey. He married Canadian ski cross 2010 gold medallist Ashleigh McIvor, started Portmaneau Stereo and now resides in Pemberton, BC where he operates his Rise and Shine leadership camps. Once a week, he also hosts The Rise with the guy writing this article.
