The Beaches reminisce about Vancouver and an unlikely pizza spot

Canadian band The Beaches has been making waves, and Daily Hive caught up with some members of the band to chat about the time they’ve spent in Vancouver and a special show coming to B.C. soon.

The Beaches are currently on a world tour, playing several shows across Canada before heading to Europe.

Daily Hive got an exclusive interview with band members Kylie Miller, who is the guitarist and backup vocalist, and drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel, ahead of a show in Ottawa last night at TD Place.

While a date has yet to be announced, the band’s fans from Vernon, B.C., recently won a concert as part of the SiriusXM Music Town 2025 contest. Vernon beat out seven other towns across Canada.

The Beaches have played in other parts of B.C., like Kelowna, but aside from passing through Vernon in the past, this will be their first time playing a show in the B.C. city.

Remarking on the contest, Miller said, “It’s such an interesting way to go to places where a lot of bands don’t normally go through.”

“We loved the mayor’s video. It kind of had to be Vernon after seeing that.”

Enman-McDaniel agreed with Miller, saying, “It’s really awesome that they’re given the opportunity.”

The band that hails from Toronto has been on a steady rise in popularity. They were just invited to play a Tiny Desk Concert via NPR Music.

“For us to be able to do that was a huge milestone,” Miller said, suggesting it was a bucket list item crossed off.

“It’s such a rite of passage for a lot of bands. So we were so excited when the opportunity came up,” Enman-McDaniel said.

The Beaches were just in Victoria and Vancouver, and the island show at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre was their first sold-out arena show ever. It was the first show back in Canada after several dates in the States.

Miller called it an amazing way to come back into Canada, saying, “It felt like we were truly being celebrated.”

Enman-McDaniel said she shed a tear and got a bit emotional about it, too.

On the note of emotion, the Instagram post about the Victoria show featured a picture of a young girl with a sign that read, “You helped me be myself.”

“That means so much,” Miller said.

“That’s kind of why we’re doing this,” she added, mentioning some of her role models when they started, like Avril Lavigne. Some of the band’s other influences include Paramore and Tegan & Sara.

“It’s all you want, especially being women in the music industry. That’s the epitome of success for me,” Enman-McDaniel said.

Having also just done a show in Vancouver, and being from Toronto, we needed to ask The Beaches about their thoughts on the city and some of their favourite spots.

Miller highlighted how they’ve spent a fair amount of time in Vancouver, including coming here for the Junos a couple of times. Miller also had some family here, including an aunt in North Vancouver.

“But we all have our spots and favourite things to do. I’m obsessed with Lee’s Donuts,” Miller said.

Enman-McDaniels chimed in about a period where they spent a lot of time in Vancouver on the Granville Strip and mentioned a surprising spot that the band loves for pizza. They also pointed out that Vancouver sushi is miles above Toronto’s.

Finally, we asked Miller and Enman-McDaniel if they had a message for the Vernon fans who are eagerly anticipating their concert.

“We’re so excited to come play for you for the first time, and congratulations on coming together to win this very exciting competition,” Enman-McDaniel said.

“And to your mayor, you are an absolute legend,” Miller added.
