Nike has opened within the outdoor retail component of The Amazing Brentwood (TAB) shopping centre, making it the first major international retailer to open within the newly built retail space in the mall’s redevelopment.

Their TAB location features a new store design concept with a wrap-around shoe wall, a lounge area, and light art installations.

The onset of COVID-19 delayed some of the opening of the businesses that were scheduled to open in the mall earlier this year.

Upscale sports and outdoor apparel retailer Sporting Life, occupying a 44,000-sq-ft space, as well as Starbucks, Body Energy Club, Basil Box, and and various banks are some of the businesses that have already opened.

The Starbucks Reserve is stacked on top of a new two-storey McDonalds, which has completed construction but has yet to open.

Cactus Club Cafe, spanning over two levels with a rooftop patio, and Soon Coffee are slated to open before the end of this year.

The next big wave of openings is anticipated for early 2021, including Metro Vancouver’s first Cineplex The Rec Room — a 40,000-sq-ft entertainment centre with about 90 arcade and video game machines, virtual reality, and ping pong. The Rec Room will also have two main dining options — the casual sit-down dining restaurant called Three10, and The Shed for quick bites and drinks.

A large box-shaped bar is accessible from all of its sides, including “The Hall,” which is the live entertainment venue. Over 70 television screens will be scattered across the entire The Rec Room, allowing guests to follow their favourite sports events from varying entertainment and dining environments.

A TAB spokesperson told Daily Hive Urbanized other openings early next year include Small Victory cafe, OEB Breakfast, and a brand new food court called TABLES.

Then in the spring, Cineplex will open the VIP Theatres portion of its presence at TAB. This adults-only, upscale theatre experience will have a total of five VIP auditoriums. There are no regular auditoriums.

Other major spring openings entail a flagship H&M store with H&M Home, Adidas, and Sephora.

Outdoor retail public spaces at the redevelopment are gradually opening. The public plaza near the pedestrian bridge entrance into SkyTrain’s Brentwood Town Centre Station has been fully open for some time, along with the operation of its significant water feature with programmable oscillating fountains that are amplified at nighttime by ever-changing LED lights.

The residential towers of TAB’s first phase, comprised of 1,700 homes including rentals, reached completion earlier this year. The office component of the first phase is still under construction, and it will be largely occupied by a WeWork co-working location, which is currently slated to open in December 2022.

Altogether, the entire 28-acre redevelopment will be built over four phases, featuring over 250 stores and restaurants within 1.1 million sq. ft. of retail space (double the existing retail), and 11 residential towers with over 6,000 homes combined.

The new retail will include yet-to-be-named anchor tenants such as a grocery store and an upscale department store.

Prior to COVID-19, the mall’s owner and developer, Shape Properties, had planned to commence construction on the second phase as early as within two years. At the time, this was dependent on whether a decision is made to renovate or demolish and replace the existing enclosed indoor galleria mall — the structure with a distinctive white teflon fabric roof — located at the centre of the property.
