Tampons and sanitary pads are now available for free at information desks throughout Vancouver International Airport.

The move comes after a traveller complained that feminine hygiene products were too expensive at YVR, costing as much as $12.99.

According to a release, airport staff carried out a price investigation of commercial vendors at YVR and found the products were priced between $2.99 and $7.99.

One of the eight vendors had been selling products priced at $12.99, said the release, but had already dropped the price at the time of the investigation.

YVR told Daily Hive that packages consisting of one pad and two tampons will be available at info counters throughout the terminal.

According to Brock Penner, manager of corporate communications at YVR, the products will be “discretely packaged.”

The airport is also planning to install more feminine hygiene product vending machines, to ensure there is one in every women’s washroom.

YVR also invites any passengers who need help in this regard to call 604-207-7077 or tweet @yvrairport any time of day.

“Our passengers are our community. If anybody ever needs anything at the airport we want to help,” said the release from YVR. “We will assist as best we can with any request.”
