5 reasons why working out with a friend is the key to better fitness

Hands up if you had a great time socializing in the month of December.

Let’s be real, there was a lot going on; office parties, lunches, and every other event where there just so happened to be plenty of food.

And now that it’s January, your emphasis may have shifted toward being more active. It may have even been one of your New Year’s resolutions. But how can you focus on your health without feeling like you’ve shut yourself off from the world?

It might seem like stating the obvious, but being social doesn’t mean there has to be a beverage or a meal involved. In fact, working out with friends is an awesome (and fun) way to be social and healthy at the same time.

Don’t sweat it (sorry) if you don’t have a fitness buddy to team up with. There are people who share your passions at the YMCA. All you have to do is show up for one of their drop-in fitness classes like yoga, cyclefit, or bootcamp, and you’ll find people who are there for the same reasons as you. You might even make some new friends while you’re at it.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the top five reasons why working out with a friend is the smartest move you can make right now.

1) Goal Setting

It’s important to make sure you have the right expectations from the beginning. Setting goals with a partner can help keep things realistic. Find someone who achieved the success you are looking for and get their feedback to ensure your goals are achievable.

2) Accountability

Working out with someone else is a great way to keep on track. Thinking of bailing on your workout? It’s not that easy if you’re meeting up with someone. The right workout buddy will help you stick to your goals and be a great source of support during the hard times. Cue high five.

3) Knowledge

As they say, two heads are better than one. Let someone show you a new way to stretch those weary muscles or share some of their favourite exercises with you. This will give your workout a little variety, too.

4) Safety

A workout partner is more than just someone to spot you while lifting weights. Having someone watch your back can ensure you have the correct posture on an exercise bike or a yoga mat. A slight adjustment can make all the difference!

5) Hey – It’s more fun

There’s no denying it – working out with other people is simply more enjoyable. Time to reenact your favourite movie training montage!

If being active (and feeling good) is one of your New Year’s resolutions, don’t delay in kicking it into action. January is the perfect time start and join the YMCA – you get to pay a no joiner fee and save up to $75.

Some of perks that come with a YMCA membership include; unlimited drop-in group fitness classes, swim lessons for all ages, convenient program times, and access to all YMCAs in Canada when you’re traveling. To make it better, there are no locked-in contracts and you can place your membership on hold for up to four months if you need to.
