Summertime in Vancouver is full of exciting cultural celebrations, and one that we are thrilled for the return of is a huge Taiwan festival.

The popular annual TAIWANfest will take place from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at several locations in Downtown Vancouver, including šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énk Square, Granville Street, the Annex, Wilms Salon, and more.

This year’s festival theme is “Echoes of the Ocean,” exploring the emotional paradoxes of migration, identity, and belonging through shared stories and artistic conversations.

“Far from offering token cultural displays, TAIWANfest dares to ask difficult questions: What does it mean to long for a homeland?” asked organizers in a release.

“How do we navigate identities shaped by colonialism, diaspora, or silence? And what does a future look like when everything is intercultural, everything is multilingual, and everyone is part of the mainstream?”

Visitors can ponder these questions themselves through a huge lineup of free events, including live music and performances, family-friendly activities, art markets, and public talks.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a summer festival in Vancouver without the variety of food trucks on site serving up delicious eats for guests. Previous years of TAIWANfest featured food stands, a Taiwan bar, and a beer garden.

Details of this year’s food and drink offerings will be announced closer to.

A highlight of TAIWANfest 2025 is the lineup of artists at šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énk Square throughout the long weekend. There will be a Rally for Taiwan featuring Taiwanese artists singing in Hokkien, Hakka, and Indigenous languages; Flamenco performances with Flamenco Rosario; and free dance lessons and youth performances curated by Barangay Project Society.

There will also be art exhibitions on Granville Street, such as Traces of Blue: Indigo Dye and Where The Tiles Took Me, and a discussion with Taiwanese writer Chih-Hsin Chang, author of Away From Home and Back: My United Family and Xiu Mei.

Wilms Salon will also host several talks during TAIWANfest, including Mu-Jhen Chen discussing her connection to Hakka Culture.

“Multiculturalism in Canada has long been marketed through surface-level celebrations,” said a festival curator. “TAIWANfest believes it’s time to move from performance to provocation—from coexistence to co-creation.”

More details on the full TAIWANfest lineup can be found online.
