Community-signed 'time capsule' segment installed as Surrey-Langley SkyTrain guideway takes shape

The signatures and messages left by members of the public on a piece of the future Surrey-Langley SkyTrain have now been incorporated into the elevated guideway.

The community-signed concrete segment has been installed immediately east of the intersection of Fraser Highway and 64th Avenue in Surrey, permanently embedding a snapshot of the community.

The installation follows a public event held at Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre on July 25, 2026, which saw long lines from hundreds of people looking to sign panels that would ultimately be placed inside one of the precast concrete guideway segments.

Just days after that event, those panels were subsequently secured to the interior walls and ceiling of the hollow concrete segment, before it was lifted into place as part of the elevated guideway.

This feature effectively serves as a time capsule, capturing a moment in the project’s history. When it will see daylight again remains to be seen; SkyTrain’s concrete infrastructure is designed to have a lifespan of up to 100 years.

The project team previously noted it was exploring ways to mark the segment so its location can be identified in the future.

This is one of the 16-km-long elevated guideway’s 4,400 pre-cast concrete segments, which are manufactured off-site at a temporary plant in Campbell Heights and then transported to the installation location, with four specialized gantry cranes used to lift the segments into place.

The specialized gantry cranes are being used to install the precast concrete segments along the route. After being lifted, steel tendons are threaded through each group of segments and pulled tight to lock them together into a single guideway span, while high-strength epoxy is applied along the adjoining edges.

As of July 2026, the cranes have completed 50 per cent of the 16-km-long elevated guideway.

Construction is also well underway on all eight new stations, and the installation process for the running rails and some other trackwork began this past spring.

If all goes as planned, elevated guideway construction — the work of the four specialized gantry cranes — will reach completion in mid-2027, and station construction and related work will finish in late 2028. Railway tracks and electrical and automated train control systems installation will begin in Spring 2026 and end in late 2028. Full system testing and commissioning will begin in late 2026 in preparation for the late 2029 opening.

Along this elongated Expo Line, a one-train ride between Langley City Centre Station and Waterfront Station in Downtown Vancouver will be about 65 minutes, while the trip between Langley City Centre Station and King George Station will be about 22 minutes.

SkyTrain’s Millennium Line Broadway extension reaching Arbutus Street in Vancouver will open in late 2027, with testing using running trains now well underway on fully completed segments of track.
