Brain & Other Stories

What: A two-part performance by spoken word artist, former Canadian poetry SLAM champ, theatre artist, and musician Brendan McLeod. Brain is an upbeat, intense story about the miracle of the mind.

Nicomekl Riverfront Park World Wetlands Event

Nicomekl Riverfront Park Wetland / City of Surrey

What: Attend a keynote presentation by Dr. Sean Boyd, Research Scientist from Environment Canada Wildlife Research Division, Science and Technology Branch. Then go on a walking tour of the wetland and riparian areas at the future Nicomekl Riverfront Park. Celebrate and converse with environmental professionals, enthusiasts and interested individuals. Wear waterproof footwear for the walking tour.

Thursday Artist Talk: Joanne Dennis, “Opening the Doors”

What: Local artist Joanne Dennis has made a series of paintings inspired by the doors that have caught her attention in her travels. Her paintings are made from rich acrylic glazes, textures, and oil pastels. Journey with Dennis through the stories of these doors and the creative processes they’ve opened up for her. There will be time for questions and conversation following the talk. Refreshments are provided. This event is presented by the Surrey Art Gallery Association in partnership with Surrey Art Gallery, and with support from the Arts Council of Surrey.

Art on the Loose

What: Bring your detective hat and track down clues at Surrey Art Gallery’s first art scavenger hunt. Given a list of clues, you’ll use your senses and detective skills to complete the challenge. Through the process, you’ll discover a variety of artwork in the Gallery and around the Surrey Arts Centre, such as a responsive sound piece and a spinning artwork. Attendees are welcome to dress like a detective.

Fred Penner

What: Many of today’s parents grew up with Fred Penner, watching him on CBC TV (Fred Penner’s Place, 1985-1997), and singing along to “The Cat Came Back” and “Sandwiches.” Fred’s career as a musician and television personality has endeared him in the hearts of Canadians of all ages, and he continues to write catchy, thought-provoking tunes that kids and their parents can share and enjoy.

Lunar New Year

Classic Book Club

What: Join Historic Stewart Farm on the last Thursday of each month and enjoy an evening discussing favourite Victorian-era books in the cozy farmhouse with friends, tea and homemade goodies. The first book discussed on February 28, 2019, will be Mansfield Park by Jane Austen, circa 1814. While a tentative book schedule is set, the group will have feedback on the book selection for the remaining seven sessions.
