A Squamish firefighter will be appearing in court later this month over the alleged possession and distribution of child pornography.

According to a statement from the Squamish RCMP, 43-year-old John “Taavo” Martin was arrested last June. Police and the Provincial Integrated Child Exploitation Unit worked together and executed a search warrant that led to Martin’s arrest.

“The investigation was initiated as a result of information received from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children,” says RCMP.

Martin, who was a serving firefighter at the time, was charged with one count of the possession of child pornography and one count of distribution of child pornography.

He has since been released with a court appearance scheduled for later this month.

Cst. Ashley Mackay, Media Relations Officer for the Squamish RCMP, says that no further details regarding Martin will be released, as the matter is now before the courts.
