Slack is expanding its presence in Vancouver, where it all started a decade ago.

The San Francisco-based messaging platform, popularly used as a workplace communications tool, will be opening a new office at the Bentall 5 office tower at 550 Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver.

According to NAI Commercial’s latest market report, Slack has recently leased 34,000 sq. ft. of space in the tower, but it is unclear whether this will replace the company’s current local office at 1028 Hamilton Street in Yaletown.

The company was founded in 2009 in Vancouver, and it later relocated its headquarters to San Francisco, with global satellite offices located in Toronto, New York City, Dublin, Denver, London, Tokyo, Pune, Paris, Istanbul, and Melbourne. It has approximately 1,700 employees worldwide.

This past June, when it was valued at approximately USD $16 billion, the company went public on the NYSE. As of September, according to the company, over 12 million people actively use the platform every day — an increase of 37% year over year.

The new office location in Vancouver is near Facebook’s recently opened Vancouver office at 200 Burrard Street.
