Soccer star Sergio Ramos scheduled to play Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place this week

Mar 3 2025, 11:50 pm

The Vancouver Whitecaps are set to face off against one of the legends of the game at BC Place this week.

Legendary centre-back Sergio Ramos and Mexican team CF Monterrey will be visiting for the Round of 16 in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, and kick-off is at 7:30 pm.

Ramos joined CF Monterrey in February of this year after playing for Sevilla in La Liga, Spain’s top division last year. So far, with his new team, he’s scored once in two appearances and was imminently handed the captaincy.

The 38-year-old is generally considered to be one of the best defenders of all time. He’s played 180 games for Spain on the international stage, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and scoring 23 times. He also represented Real Madrid for 16 years at the club level, winning four UEFA Champions League titles.

The Whitecaps are playing very well right now and are off to their best MLS start in seven years, winning both of their first two matches. They also pulled off a comeback in the most recent round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup to get to the Round of 16. They’ll hope to continue the run of strong play against CF Monterrey, one of the best teams from Mexico.

It’s a two-leg series between the Whitecaps and CF Monterrey. The first game is on Wednesday, March 5, at BC Place, and the second is on Wednesday, March 12, in Mexico.

While Ramos is scheduled to face off against the Whitecaps, that doesn’t mean he will play for sure. Lionel Messi skipped his trip to Vancouver last year, and the combination of BC Place’s turf field and the long-distance travel to the Pacific Northwest means Ramos may follow suit.

Tickets for the game are on sale now, starting at $31 after taxes and fees.
