The man accused of brutally attacking a tourist on the seawall last month will be living in Vancouver.

According to a news release from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), Peterhans Nungu, 34, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm in the April 15 assault of a woman who was visiting Vancouver.

The victim released a series of TikTok videos about the attack, providing details about what happened.

The TikTok user, named Stephanie, said that she had been walking near Stanley Park when the assault occurred, adding that she believed the area was considered to be safe by most people. She claimed she was slammed to the ground by the suspect, who she believed was going to kill her.

VPD noted that Nungu was granted bail and released from police custody by a Provincial Court judge on April 23 and was transferred to a secure medical facility, where he remained under medical supervision.

Police say Nungu was released from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and will be under house arrest, living in Vancouver.

Nungu is bound by the following bail conditions:

  • Not to have contact with the victim
  • Not to possess weapons
  • Not to possess or consume alcohol or non-prescription drugs
  • Not to possess knives or any sharp-bladed instrument outside of his residence
  • Obey a 24-hour/day house arrest, unless with permission to leave for work or a medical appointment.

VPD said officers with its operations division and special investigations section will monitor Nungu during his release to ensure he complies with court conditions.

Any alleged breaches of Nungu’s conditions should be reported to police.
