Rugby sevens returning to Vancouver under a new name

Rugby sevens will indeed be back in Vancouver, but it’ll look a little bit different.

Vancouver was confirmed as one of eight destinations for SVNS, which is the new name for the World Rugby Sevens Series. Rather than being called “Canada Sevens,” the BC Place event is now called “Vancouver SVNS.”

Vancouver has hosted rugby sevens at BC Place annually since 2016.

Next year’s tournament will be held February 23-25, rather than in March like in years past. It’ll be a three-day event for the second year in a row, with both the men and women competing.

“Rugby Canada is excited to continue our annual tradition of hosting an international sevens event in Vancouver,” said Rugby Canada CEO Nathan Bombrys. “This tournament celebrates our sport and helps to grow the game, providing an opportunity for our Canadian national team players to inspire girls and boys across the country. We are grateful for the support of Sport Hosting Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia, the Government of Canada, our incredible sponsors and World Rugby, as well as our dedicated fanbase that brings a uniquely electric atmosphere to BC Place.”

Vancouver is one of eight stops on the 2023-24 SVNS tour:

  • Dubai, UAE (December 2-3)
  • Cape Town, South Africa (December 9-10)
  • Perth, Australia (January 26-28)
  • Vancouver, Canada (February 23-25)
  • Los Angeles, USA (March 2-3)
  • Hong Kong SAR, China (April 5-7)
  • Singapore, Singapore (May 3-5)
  • Madrid, Spain (May 31-June 2)

World Rugby Chief Executive Alan Gilpin called SVNS a “supercharged new identity,” promising a new concept on and off the field.

“Our ambition is for SVNS to be at the forefront of our growth strategy, appealing to a younger, leisure-hungry audience,” said Gilpin. “In eight iconic destinations played over seven months, we will bring together a truly immersive festival of rugby, music, food, and experiences to create the ultimate weekend-long get-together for young people, the hottest ticket, and open a new era for the sport.”

“We are excited to once again host the HSBC Rugby Sevens combined women’s and men’s tournament,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “This is a great opportunity for our city to showcase our passion for rugby and our hospitality to the world. I look forward to cheering our Canadian teams on as they score some amazing tries in front of their home crowd!”
