Huge festivals closing down Metro Vancouver roads this long weekend

The packed summer events calendar continues this long weekend in Metro Vancouver, and commuters and residents are being warned of several road closures for street festivals.

Community celebrations are taking place in Vancouver and Maple Ridge, and they’re part of a full weekend of fun things to do around the region.

Kicking things off on Saturday, Sept. 5, is the Our Neck of the Woods festival at Memorial Peace Park and the downtown core.

Guests can expect food trucks, family-friendly activities, and a full day of live music on three stages from 2 to 10 p.m. during the free event. Headliners this year include Bedouin Soundclash, Dear Rouge, and Tim & The Glory Boys.

The City of Maple Ridge has announced that Haney Place Loop will be closed from Thursday, Sept. 3 at 8 a.m. to Sunday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. for set-up, the festival, and tear-down.

Restrictions on Haney Place Loop include:

• Full closure at the entrance to the park with no access to the facility through the ring road
• No vehicle pick-up or drop-off at the front of the building
• Access to the over-height parking lot (accessible parking) will not be available starting on Sept. 3 at 8 a.m.

For the main event on Saturday, Sept. 5, additional road closures for Our Neck of the Woods will take place from 11 a.m. to midnight on 224th Street between McIntosh Avenue and 119th Street, and Fraser Street between Dewdney Trunk Road and McIntosh Avenue.

Those needing to drive into the underground parking can do so only from Dewdney Trunk or Edge Street.

Car Free Day Vancouver is also returning to Commercial Drive on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Visitors will find lots to see and do during the free street party, including live concerts and performances, artisan vendors and community booths, food trucks, and more.

The City of Vancouver has stated that a full closure of Commercial Drive from Grandview Highway to 1st Avenue will be in place for the festival, which runs from noon to 7 p.m.

The massive street festival is held to promote the growth of car-free culture and spaces.

Each year, thousands of attendees check out the community booths and food vendors, kids’ activities, and more during the annual event.
